First Graduate Apprentice Diploma in the North West of England

It was in 2015 that the government introduced the Diploma Apprenticeship Program, combining part-time study at a university with “real-world” learning at the workplace.

In the same year, a group of students from Manchester Metropolitan University were among the first participants in the initiative. On July 18, they became the first in the North West of England to graduate.

“I am delighted to have achieved a top notch specialist degree,” said Jessica Wong, who has studied digital and technology solutions and is ready to continue her career as a software engineer at Thales UK.

“My focus now is on forming long-term career plans to shape my career path and I want to develop my technical skills and work towards other certifications. I would recommend degree apprenticeships to anyone.

Manchester Met has launched nine diploma learning programs since 2015. In May, for example, we announced the launch of a collaboration with Fujitsu on a STEM initiative.

Graduate apprentices received congratulations from Manchester Met Chancellor Lord Mandelson

“In partnership with employers, we look forward to continuing to develop practice-oriented programs that meet the needs of industry, individuals and society,” said Professor Malcolm Press, Vice-Chancellor of Manchester Met . “[Our] The commitment to diploma learning emphasizes the university’s leadership role in ensuring that our students are prepared for the challenges of the modern workplace.

Bentley Motors and Barclays joined Thales UK and 11 other employers at the graduation ceremony at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, as 48 students celebrated their graduation.

Since this first cohort began studying at Manchester Met, more than 1,100 graduate apprentices have followed in their footsteps, working alongside more than 220 employer partners.

“Watch out for these rising stars, they will continue to inspire our next generation of engineers,” said John Peachey, head of software engineering at Thales UK. “Learning the degree involved university studies for a degree, while meeting the high standards required of a Thales engineer. This is an incredible achievement and a great reward for all the late nights and long days it takes to meet demanding homework deadlines and exam review.
